California has always been a political paradox — big ideas, bigger egos, and a government that somehow manages to frustrate nearly everyone. In his new book Election Deniers: Observations of a Candidate, David Hillberg dives headfirst into that world with the bluntness of someone who’s had enough.
Hillberg isn’t a typical political voice. He’s a veteran, an aviation specialist, actor and a man who has spent most of his life in hangars, not hearing rooms. After decades repairing aircraft serving in the U.S. Army, Aero Bureau, and USBP Air Unit, he threw his hat into the chaotic ring of California’s gubernatorial recall race. What he found, he says, was a system built to keep outsiders on the outside.
“I learned more about how politics really works in six months than I did in fifty years of voting,” Hillberg writes. That mix of frustration and determination runs through every chapter.
In Election Deniers, Hillberg walks readers through his campaign experiences and what came before. His discovery that election laws were quietly rewritten, his ballot disqualified, and his growing conviction that state politics has become an star chamber for those already in power. It’s part autobiography, part exposé, and part wake-up call.
Hillberg’s background makes the book stand out. He’s not running on party talking points or buzzwords. His lens comes from decades in aviation — a world where rules matter, precision counts, and shortcuts can cost lives. When he compares government systems to broken aircraft that no one wants to repair properly or fly, it’s hard not to nod along.
Still, there’s something refreshing about his honesty. He admits his own missteps, frustrations, and moments of disillusionment. But beneath it all, you sense a man who still believes in accountability — not as a slogan, but as a way of life.
The book lands at a moment when trust in institutions are scraping below the floor. Hillberg doesn’t claim to have all the answers, but his observations hit a nerve. Whether readers agree with his politics or not, Election Deniers captures a growing sentiment across the country: that fairness, transparency, and civic duty have become political afterthoughts.
If you want a tidy partisan take, this isn’t it. What Hillberg offers is something rarer — a brutally honest look from someone who’s seen both sides of service: defending the system, and later realizing how deeply it needs fixing.
