From Financial Institutions to Family Crisis Management: Sherri L. Combs Turned 30 Years of Banking Experience Into a National Movement Protecting Seniors

Sherri L. Combs spent three decades in the banking and financial services business. She assisted various families in resolving estate settlements, retirement transitions, and financial decisions. However, over time, one issue became clear: many families were unprepared to face the challenges of aging, and older people themselves fell victim to financial scams.

Combs realized that the major issues did not arise in cases of medical emergencies or funerals, but rather from delayed discussions and plans, and from the inability to locate credible experts. It was difficult for the families to understand the complicated paperwork, and sometimes siblings would argue about their duties; moreover, the scammers exploited these issues to their advantage.

This experience motivated Combs to establish Silver Streak Senior Services, and a nonprofit organization, Silver Streak Senior Solutions, and write The Just-In-Case Plan. All these actions created a national movement devoted to the dignified aging of elderly people and the useful preparation of the families for a possible crisis.

As Combs explains, “It shouldn’t be this hard to find help you can trust.”

Building Services Around Trust Instead of Guesswork

Online directories generally only list companies. However, Silver Streak Senior Services has adopted an entirely different model. The company was established to provide seniors, caregivers, and family members with verified providers rather than anonymous ratings or Internet searches.

This organization evaluates providers beforehand. Verification entails background checks, licensing reviews when applicable, insurance verification, reputation screening, and personal interviews. It helps families to make an informed choice with greater confidence. Today, the platform offers more than 130 types of services, including home care, legal services, financial advice, transportation, housing, health & wellness, and many other services.

Silver Streak Senior Services also connects seniors with various government agencies, nonprofit organizations, counties, educational opportunities, and even fraud protection services.

Turning Banking Experience Into Practical Guidance

Combs did not create Silver Streak on theoretical grounds. It was created from her experience working with many families who faced tough situations with financial institutions.

In many cases, she saw estate settlements fail because the documents were incomplete or their execution was affected by changes in circumstances, such as people relocating to different states and changes in financial institution rules. Most estates still entered probate regardless of the efforts made beforehand.

There is another tragic result she witnessed. Retirement savings were depleted as fraudsters gained the confidence of senior citizens from an era when a handshake meant everything.

Combs often calls senior citizens the “handshake generation.” They retired into a world of the digital age, riddled with scams, fraud, misrepresentation, and identity theft.

Helping Families Plan Before Crisis Takes Over

One of the most important messages that comes through Combs’ work is preparation.

Many families do not discuss aging because it makes people uncomfortable. Decisions are made regarding care needs, finances, housing arrangements, and obligations when a medical event occurs. Her book, The Just-In-Case Plan, promotes family decision-making before situations become urgent. It addresses topics such as long-term care planning, family communication, legacy planning, financial organization, and caregiver preparation. This book earned her four awards, including the Next Generation Indie Award for Social Change, and it became an Amazon bestseller.

Instead of preparing legal documents alone, she recommends having family discussions about expectations, responsibilities, record organization, and professional assistance in advance.

Growing From a Texas Initiative Into a National Movement

The project Silver Streak started with the intention of securing one community in Texas for seniors. The increasing demand led to the creation of a national entity serving the interests of older people and caregivers across America. Nowadays, Combs actively participates in senior centers and national events, speaking about how one can prevent fraud, cooperate within a community, and grow healthily at older ages. Combs’ project has even been recognized internationally with a Global Leadership Award, which is affiliated with the UN and the European Parliament.

A Vision Built on Safer Communities

As the number of senior citizens in America increases, so too does the need for good advice. There is financial fraud, caregiver burden, and lack of information, all of which affect families no matter where they live.

According to Sherri L. Combs, these problems could be minimized through proper planning, partnerships within local communities, and reliable information sources. Combs has worked in the banking industry, and she knows where the biggest problems are. Today, Silver Streak Senior Services, Silver Streak Senior Solutions, and The Just-In-Case Plan are Combs’ response to these problems.
