Ramesh Hussaini wants readers to look up, way up. Her debut, Afghan Lady in Space: Collection of a Storybook, launches big questions about identity, freedom, and what it means to dream without limits.
At its heart is Sonia, a young Afghan woman from a privileged family who feels trapped by routine and loneliness. She signs up for a mission to Mars, part scientific exploration, part escape from an empty life. On Mars’s barren surface, she faces more than cosmic isolation. Her meeting with Mr. John, a fellow traveler, sparks a fragile love story that reminds us how human connection can survive even in the coldest places.
Running parallel is the story of a married man, adrift in digital isolation. Online, he finds passion and betrayal in equal measure, highlighting how our relationships break and mend, whether lightyears apart or behind a glowing screen. Woven through it all are mothers fighting quietly but fiercely for their children’s future, a thread that grounds the book in a deep, universal truth about sacrifice and love.
Hussaini’s inspiration runs deeper than fiction. “I started writing my books a few years ago, driven by a passion for storytelling and poetry,” she says. “My Afghan heritage, my personal journey, and my belief in hope and equality push me forward.” She aims to be a voice for Afghan women who often go unheard, bringing their strength and dreams to the page.
“My goal is to show the world that Afghan women can have big dreams just like anyone else. I want my stories to help build a more just world where women and men have equal opportunities,” Hussaini says. She hopes her work opens readers’ eyes to the beauty and depth of Afghan culture, and to the everyday resilience of its people.
What makes Afghan Lady in Space different is how it bridges cultures. Hussaini weaves Afghan and American experiences, telling stories that blend cultural roots with universal themes. “It’s cultural storytelling with a touch of sci-fi and a lot of poetry,” she says. “It’s about love, hope, and the power to dream beyond what we see.”
Her target audience? “Anyone who wants to read about resilience and hope,” Hussaini says. “People who want to see the world through different eyes and understand the strength of Afghan women.”
Her journey hasn’t been easy. “Growing up in Afghanistan, then moving to America, these experiences gave me a unique perspective. I’ve seen what Afghan women go through. I’ve seen their courage and their struggles, and I want my books to show the world their true stories,” she says.
Hussaini believes that love is universal and powerful enough to break barriers. “It can inspire great things. I hope my stories challenge stereotypes and remind people that dreams — like love — belong to all of us.”
She knows that one day Afghan girls will be free to study, dance, fall in love, and even travel to space without fear or limits. “One day, people will be kind to each other, and there will be no war,” she says. “One day, dreams will be reality.”
In Afghan Lady in Space, Hussaini reminds readers that dreams are real and powerful things. “If my dream is wrong, then all dreams are wrong,” she says. “Even the Prophet Muhammad dreamed of ascending to heaven and speaking with God. Love is pure, and our connections prove we’re never alone.”
